Like many of us, Leon had to work a little harder to stay strong as he approached mid-life. As time went on, he started to fall more often too. Leon is a very independent person and he resisted assistance from staff and he really didn’t want to exercise to get stronger.
Becky talked to Leon about what was going on. Leon admitted he felt like he was being told what to do and didn't want other people telling him what to do and when to do it. She sympathized with Leon and they talked about how getting older is no fun for anyone and its totally normal. That as we get older our bodies change, we get aches and pains we never had before and sometimes we need more help even when we don't want to admit it because no one wants to lose their independence. Leon agreed and agreed to try to allow help from others. He shared he just wanted to be 'normal' like everyone else.
Ever since that conversation Leon asks for help when he feels he needs it and is more open to allow others to help him. He exercises daily whether its walking and "window shopping" or his pedal bike at home while playing along with the Price is Right.
Recently, Becky asked him 'hey when was the last time you fell?' as he was telling his day program staff that he didn't want to exercise. Leon looked at her and shrugged, saying "I don't know". She pointed out to Leon how he's been exercising and he's clearly getting stronger and he hadn't fallen in a few months. Leon stopped for a second and then gave me Becky a hug and thanked her for reminding him that he's making himself stronger and healthier! Believe it or not, Leon actually went right on his pedal bike after that.
